RTDNA Announces Winners of Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards

The RTDNA has announced the winners of the 2012 Regional Edward R. Murrow awards.

Radio, television and online winners, divided into small and large markets, were selected from more than 3,500 entries. The RTDNA says this year is “one of the most competitive Edward R. Murrow Awards seasons in RTDNA history.”

Large market overall excellence winners were KING in Seattle, KTVU in Oakland, KMGH in Denver, KARE in Minneapolis, KMBC in Kansas City, KHOU in Houston, WTHR in Indianapolis, WLKY in Louisville, WIAT in Birmingham, WCVB in Boston, KDKA in Pittsburgh, WSB in Atlanta and CIVT in Vancouver. Former WGCL News Director Mike Cavender Named Executive Director of RTDNA

Local news veteran Mike Cavender has been named executive director of the Radio Television Digital News Association and Foundation.

Cavender is a former director of news and public affairs at WGCL in Atlanta, as well as vice president of news at WUSA in Washington, DC and WTSP in Tampa. Most recently, he was the vice president of client solutions for Synaptic Digital, a media creation and distribution platform.

“Throughout my news career, I’ve benefited greatly from the support and guidance of the RTDNA/F,” Cavender said in a statement. “It’s a tremendous honor to lead this great organization that has for decades been so important to me and thousands of electronic journalists.”

Online News Editor Takes Over as RTDNA Chairman

Emphasizing its reach across the digital media landscape, RTDNA appointed the editor-in-chief of a local news website and a public media news director to key positions on its board this week.

At the close of its Excellence in Journalism 2011 Conference, the organization introduced Kevin Benz of CultureMapAustin as its new chairman and members elected Vincent Duffy, news director of Michigan Radio, as chair-elect of RTDNA.

Duffy is the first first public media news director elected to the position and Benz is the first “pure-play” digital officer in the history of RTDNA. Read more

Breakdown: Local TV News Salaries Increase

Looks like drinks are on you. A recent study from RTDNA/Hofstra University found that local TV news salaries rose 7.3% during 2010.

That increase is a far cry from the bad old days of two years ago, when salaries fell 4.4%.

Following Photojournalist’s Arrest, RTDNA Offers Media Training to Police Departments

The RTDNA is sending a message to police officers that could be viewed as either an olive branch or a veiled critique. Or both.

Following the recently renounced arrest of Long Island photojournalist Phil Datz, the RTDNA is offering first amendment training assistance to the Suffolk County Police Department, as well as any other police departments around the country that may be in need of a refresher course in media relations.

“This arrest showed a gross misunderstanding of the media’s First Amendment right to inform the public,” RTDNA chairman Mark Kraham stated. “With that said, RTDNA is here to help.”

The organization has not gone into specifics about what sort of assistance it would be willing to provide police departments and it appears that it will consider questions and requests from departments on a case-by-case basis.

RTDNA/Hofstra: 78% of Local Stations Share Content

The third part of an RTDNA/Hofstra University survey of local news found that 78.4 percent of stations provide content for at least one media outlet that is not their own station or website.

The bulk of content-sharing comes with local radio stations and mobile devices, but 25.1 percent of stations report sharing content with another station in their market. Another 10.1 percent report sharing content with stations in another market, and 9.9 percent share content with a cable channel.

The RTDNA/Hofstra study found that of the stations with shared service agreements, 78.5 percent of the shared content was reported to be information, compared to 35.5 percent that share pool video and 10.2 percent that share news helicopters.

Content-sharing at the local level has recently been under heavy scrutiny from media watchdog groups (like this one), who claim “photocopy journalism” has made local news less reliable.

RTDNA/Hofstra Survey: Record Amount of Local News Produced in 2010

The second part of the annual RTDNA/Hofstra University study found the average local station produced a record 5.3 hours of news a day in 2010, up 18 minutes from 2009. The network affiliate average is even higher, recording 5.6 hours of news daily.

Almost 35 percent of stations added a newscast last year — most often occuring in the 4:30 a.m. timeslot on weekdays, RTDNA/Hofstra finds. The majority of stations — 58.9 percent –recorded the same number of newscasts in 2010 and 2009, and only 6.5 percent of stations cut a newscast.

Looking ahead, 36.9 percent of local stations report a planned increase in news coverage in the coming year. RTDNA/Hofstra point out in the survey results that one third of all stations produce news that runs on another stations, so the possibilities for expansion throughout local markets are endless.

RTDNA/Hofstra Study Finds More Jobs, Higher Profits in Local News Last Year

According to the latest RTDNA/Hofstra University study, 2010 was a good year for local news. Stations across the country added 750 jobs last year, an increase of 2.9 percent from 2009. Nationwide, 26,522 people are employed at 745 local stations.

Local news employment has not fully recovered from 2008, when a flailing U.S. economy led to the loss of 1,200 jobs, but RTDNA/Hofstra finds that anticipated hiring in 2011 could bring the industry back to its pre-recession peak of 27,817 total employees.

Station profitability was also up — 57.4 percent of local stations turned a profit last year, up nearly 10 percent from 2009. View the full results of the survey here.

RTDNA Announces 2011 Murrow Award Winners

RTDNA has officially announced the winners of the 2011 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award.

KUSA (Denver), KARE (Minneapolis-St. Paul), KRDO (Colorado Springs), and WGRZ (Buffalo) had especially impressive showings this year, dominating their respective divisions in addition to winning Overall Excellence.

In a show of vindication for KARE’s departing VP of News Tom Lindner, the NBC-affiliate won 7 of the 12 categories in its division.

KTUL (Tulsa) and WVUE (New Orleans) also garnered a significant amount of awards, with their call signs showing up more than any other station in their individual divisions.

5 Tips for Developing News Stories Via Social Media

As WABC found out last night in trying to glean information on Facebook about a plane’s apparent technical malfunction, social media can be a tricky place to develop news stories.

Thankfully, RTDNA blogger Lynn Walsh has a few tips:

1. Connect with people. Whether it is on Facebook or Twitter, search for the people, groups, etc. that are influences in your community or your beat and follow them or friend them.

2. Search for key phrases. This is best for Twitter. If you covet education search and create saved search boxes on your mobile phone for key words related to the district you cover.

3. Pay attention to comments/replies. This is crucial. Whether it is on Facebook, your website or Twitter, read comments and reach out to those who post them.

4. Continue the conversation. If you see interesting comments or want to know more ASK!

5. Report/clarify social media rumors. People say a lot of things online. Some of it is true and some is not.
