WISH Names Assistant News Director

WISH, the LIN owned Indianapolis CBS affiliate, has announced Jeff Mulligan as assistant news director.

“I’m looking forward to joining the 24-Hour News 8 team,” said Mulligan in a statement.  “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work serving the viewers of Central Indiana.”

Mulligan joins WISH from KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO where is the assistant news director. Before working for KFVS, Mulligan was executive producer for WDAF in Kansas City, MO. He started his career at WTWO in Terre Haute, IN.

As Angela Buchman’s Debut Nears, Chief Meteorologist Chris Wright to Exit WTHR

Chief meteorologist Chris Wright is leaving WTHR, Dispatch Broadcast Group’s NBC affiliate in Indianapolis.

Wright’s exit comes as the station prepares for the September arrival of Angela Buchman, who joins WTHR from rival WISH after sitting out a yearlong non-compete clause in her contract. Wright told NewsBlues that WTHR offered him “a huge pay cut and a reduced role” and said he would “go try to catch on somewhere else.”

“Despite our efforts and wanting him to remain at WTHR, Chris has chosen to look for other opportunities,” Dispatch vice president of news John Cardenas told the Indianapolis Star.

WTHR has yet to respond to TVSpy’s request for comment.

Lori Wilson Joins WISH as Anchor

WISH has announced Lori Wilson will join the Indianapolis CBS affiliate in mid-June as an anchor and reporter.

“Lori has built a solid career filled with many examples of quality journalism both reporting out on the street and behind the anchor desk,” said WISH news director Steve Bray. “We are thrilled to welcome her home to Central Indiana and to our 24-Hour News 8 team.”

In addition to anchoring the 5:00 p.m. news, Wilson will also report live during the station’s 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. news. Read more

Mike Lopez Named News Director at WEAU

Mike Lopez is the new news director at WEAU in Eau Claire, Wisc., the station confirmed to TVSpy.

Lopez joins the NBC affiliate from WVEC in Norfolk, where he was the assistant news director for seven years. He has also worked as an executive producer at WAVY in Norfolk and WISH in Indianapolis and as a producer at KRON in San Franscisco.

Lopez, who started earlier this month, replaces Eric Shepard.

Meteorologist Robb Ellis Joins WISH

Indianapolis CBS affiliate WISH has announced Robb Ellis will join the station as its evening meteorologist.

“Robb brings a wealth of meteorological experience, especially in severe weather coverage. He has passion for the science and understanding of the changing dynamics of weather that is Central Indiana,” said news director Steve Bray. “Robb has experience both as a researcher and scientist in climatology and as an on-air meteorologist. This background not only ensures Hoosiers an accurate forecast, but a dedication to their safety in times of severe weather.”

Ellis, who comes to WISH from WECT-WSFX in Wilmington, NC, will serve as meteorologist for the station’s 5:00, 6:00, 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. newscasts. Read more

WISH Promotes Steve Bray to News Director

One down, two to go.   WISH has removed the “interim” from interim news director Steve Bray‘s title, reducing the number of open news director slots in Indianapolis to two.

“Steve’s varied and experienced background in news and weather, as well as his dedication to being a first informer with digital and on-air, makes him the ideal candidate to lead our news department,” said WISH president and general manager Jeff White.  “Steve has made a tremendous positive impact in every one of his many roles at WISH-TV.  I look forward to this success continuing as news director.” Read more

News Director Kevin Finch Out at WRTV

News director Kevin Finch has parted ways with Indianapolis ABC affiliate WRTV, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal:

A WRTV spokesman on Thursday confirmed that Finch was no longer with the station, but declined to provide details, citing station policy that prohibits commenting on personnel matters.

Finch was hired at WRTV in April 2011. Before joining the station as news director he produced documentaries for cable networks. He is also a former news director at rival WISH, the CBS affiliate.

Two stations in Indianapolis are now without news directors. Patti McGettigan parted ways with WISH in August.

Deanna Dewberry Joins KXAS As Consumer and Investigative Reporter

Last month, we told you about Deanna Dewberry was moving to KXAS in Dallas. Today, the NBC O&O has officially announced her hire as a consumer and investigative reporter.

Dewberry joins KXAS’ recently revamped investigative team, which is lead by reporter Scott Friedman.

“With the successful launch of our investigative team earlier this year, the timing is perfect for an experienced reporter like Deanna to take on issues very practical to us as consumers,” KXAS VP of news Susan Tully said in a statement. Read more

Deanna Dewberry Joins KXAS From WISH

Deanna Dewberry will join Dallas NBC O&O KXAS next month, a station spokesperson confirms to TVSpy.

Dewberry will be a consumer and investigative reporter for KXAS. She comes to the station from WISH in Indianapolis, where she co-anchors the noon and 5 p.m. newscasts. News of Dewberry’s KXAS hire was first reported by NewsBlues.

It is a return to Dallas for the Texas native, who used to be an anchor and reporter at WFAA in Dallas. She has also worked at KLBK and KCBD in Lubbock, Tex., and KTHV in Little Rock.

WTHR Officially Announces the Hire of Angela Buchman from Rival WISH

It’s official: Indianapolis meteorologist Angela Buchman is joining WTHR, the NBC affiliate, next year.

Buchman signed off from rival WISH, the CBS affiliate, last month. The long-rumored move, officially announced today by WTHR, will happen in September 2013, when Buchman’s non-compete clause with WISH expires.

In a statement announcing the move, WTHR news director Keith Connors said Buchman’s hire “underscores our long-term and on-going commitment to being the leader in weather coverage.”

“Angela will make a significant contribution to our team and to keeping Hoosier families safe from the storm,” Connors said. “I couldn’t be happier that she will be joining us.”
