In Brief: Polished, Clean, Sticky, and Dirty

  • “Polished and clean, as well as sticky and dirty.” That’s how Brooklyn- and Helsinki-based illustrator Jesse Auersalo describes his aesthetic. Deanne Cheuk has convinced him to elaborate in an AIGA/NY small talk event scheduled for next Wednesday evening. Take-home messages and authenticity will abound. “I believe there is always new land to discover in the area of making an image,” Auersalo has said. “It’s more about forgetting what you thought was cool than saving your ass through cheap imitations.”
  • Andy Warhol died 23 years ago today. Food & Wine celebrates his life and work with a “soup tribute“: gussied-up versions of ten Campbell’s Soups that appeared in his work. Pass the Gruyère toasts.
  • The Academy Awards are approaching. Admire some of the posters of Oscar winners past at Posteritati. “Oscar Night & The City,” a new exhibition presented in association with NYC & Company, opens next Monday at the company’s New York gallery. Or peruse the online offerings, including this great Japanese poster for Forrest Gump.
  • Kindles? iPads? We prefer the hard stuff, but are we fighting a losing battle? Jason Epstein gets out his crystal ball for a swell essay on the inevitably digital future in the March 11 issue of the New York Review of Books.
  • Speaking of high-risk ephemera, what happens when global shifts away from materialistic overproduction are mirrored in art that does away with a physical product? That’s the question to be tackled in the latest Guggenheim Forum, “Beyond Material Worth,” which kicks off today. Join the week-long conversation here and don’t miss Thursday’s live chat.
