The Official Casting Call: Top Design

As we astutely observed in late December, Top Design has retained a troupe of Magical Elves to de-beige its second season. Beyond setting the soundstage on fire and telling contestants to design their way out, we can’t really see where this model could be more intriguing; we found the first season to be pretty ho-hum, excepting, of course, Kelly Wearstler‘s sand-socks. Case in point: View winner Matt‘s stirring acceptance video above.

So why not add a little spice to the sophomore run by tossing your perky personality into the fray? Are you an unstoppable design force? Do you cry easily? Then you’d be perfect! Here’s the pitch:

BravoTV is seeking undiscovered Interior Design stars for the second season of its hit competition series TOP DESIGN! Up-and-coming as well as established Interior Design professionals and aspirants will compete for career-making opportunities and work under the eyes of the industry’s top names.

This is your chance to battle for a coveted spread in ELLE DECOR, $100,000 and the momentum to achieve your dream career.

We’re Joining the “Design Squad”

Not that we haven’t completely lost interest in that other design reality show (actually, we have, except we still find ourselves captivated by Kelly Wearstler‘s outfits), but how could we choose lemon-scented parties on Bravo when there are kids building roadsters over on PBS?

Design Squad” throws kids into killer product design and engineering challenges, from building musical instruments for a local band to creating peanut butter making machines for a women’s collective in Haiti. The first episode had the eight teens converting a tricycle and a red kiddie wagon into motorized vehicles, which they race on a New England speedway.

Besides, wisecracking teen Tom beats snotty, overly-smug Michael any day.

Maybe Not ‘Top Design,’ But Viewing Party Is Tops

We’re not passing any judgement about a TV show where the proposed tagline was a brilliant “See ya later, decorator.” But our bloggy sisters over at FishbowlLA seem to have had a pretty rockin’ time at the “Top Design” viewing party on Wednesday night, including some dish about the contestants…and the judges:

Ashton pointed out that the call on judgment day was 6 am, and by the time the scene was shot at 4:30am, everyone was exhausted. Keller told everyone within earshot that Ralphie-look alike Michael Erik, and Goil are super-nice, amazing people, the most wonderful people in the universe. One of the winning designers, who dreamed up the litter box, Elizabeth Moore, had been a stylist for Prince. Someone, can’t recall who exactly, told us that if we thought Kelly Wearstler‘s tutu and leggings get-up was odd, keep watching.

It doesn’t matter what she wears, actually. That Wearstler is one hot bitch.

Blogging “Top Design” (So We Don’t Have To)

Here we go! Promising to do for design what “Project Runway” did for fashion, Bravo’s “Top Design” is gearing up for a knock-down, drag-out season pitting “half Henry Rollins, half David Lee Roth, with a sprinkle of Evil Knievel” against “George Michael” in a quest to bring a new level of respect to the design industry. Oh, boy.

Watch as judges La-Z-Boy Todd Oldham, Anti-Depressive Jonathan Adler, Playboy’s Kelly Wearstler and Elle Decor’s Margaret Russell (sorry, no dirt on her yet) roll their eyes in mock-distain as the twelve designers try to “Top” one another.

Don’t want to watch? Really, you don’t? Never fear: Blogging Top Design has got it covered.
