Popular URL shortener Bitly has acquired Twitterfeed, the tool that allows publishers to auto-send updates to Twitter and other platforms.
The purchase is essential a talent hire (an ‘acqhire’, as Peter Kafka of AllThingsD puts it), as Twitterfeed is made up of just one employee, Mario Menti.
There’s value in the buyout, as Twitterfeed has a million active users making five million posts per day. The service already uses Bitly to shorten its links, so there’s a natural fit which should add some weight to Bitly’s position in the social space, particularly on Twitter.
Says Bitly on their blog:
The publishing workflow provided by Twitterfeed constitutes a core part of the bitly ecosystem. Along with other products (such as SocialFlow and dlvr.it) that use bitly to share content and track engagement, Twitterfeed is both creating and consuming gobs of bitly data every day. Twitterfeed had over a million active users last month, and we look forward to empowering them with even more actionable insight from bitly data. We also look forward to bringing the enhanced sharing functionality of Twitterfeed directly to bitly.com, making it easier than ever to collect, organize, shorten and share links.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it’s another example of the Twitter ecosystem continuing to merge and downsize, although this time it isn’t Twitter themselves doing the deal.
