How Many Twitter Accounts Have Over 1 Million Followers?

If you’ve been on Twitter for any length of time, you’ll likely know that Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber are among the most-followed Twitter users, each with a follower count in the millions. But just how hard is it to reach one million followers? And can non-celebrities achieve that coveted number?

Lady Gaga has over 8,700,000 followers, and Justin Bieber isn’t far behind. In fact, the top 10 Twitter users are all celebrities or famous faces. Each with over 5 million followers, the top ten Twitter users are:

1. Lady Gaga
2. Justin Bieber
3. Britney Spears
4. Barack Obama
5. Kim Kardashian
6. Ashton Kutcher
7. Katy Perry
8. Ellen DeGeneres
9. Taylor Swift
10. Oprah Winfrey

If you’re plugged in to the mainstream media, you’ll know all of these names.

However, the number of Twitter users with at least one million followers is far greater than just ten. According to TwitterCounter, an application which displays Twitter stats and refreshes daily, there are currently 366 Twitter users who can brag about having over one million followers.

There are over 200 million Twitter account out there, so this group of 366 is a pretty elite bunch. However, they’re not all celebrities or well-known beyond their niche.

Many of those Twitter accounts with over one million followers are news feeds, like CNN Breaking News ( in 19th place with over 4,000,000 followers), The New York Times (in 35th place with 2,996,000 followers), and TIME.com (in 58th place with 2,400,000 followers).

Others cater to those in the tech industry, who were among the first adopters of Twitter. Some of these million-plus Twitter tech accounts include Twitter‘s own account (in 12th place with over 4,500,000 followers), Google‘s Twitter account (in 36th place with over 2,800,000 followers), and Mashable‘s Twitter account (in 71st place with over 2,200,000 followers).

When you get to the accounts with under 2 million followers, you begin to see some “regular” people and businesses. Many journalists, CEOs, charities, and authors have over one million followers. And there are even some “behind the scenes” people like producers and managers who aren’t usually in the spotlight with more than a million followers.

It’s not impossible to reach a million followers – as Charlie Sheen proves – but it’s not easy either. You’ve got to build a solid social media presence, and use Twitter creatively if you want to break into the elite 366.
