Interested In Design? Here Are 5 Twitter Accounts You Should Be Following

A lot of people get into the routine of following folks on twitter that are already ensconced in our tight circles or find and follow us, so we follow them back out of mere courtesy. In this new series, I’m going to showcase people from various backgrounds and industries to help you liven up your feed and get inspired! My aim is that by following people outside of your comfort zone, you’ll start to make art, or cook at home more or take that night course for small business management!

This week, it’s all about design.

1. @designsponge

Grace Bonney’s tweets are great, but it’s the links to the blog that will hook you.  Launched in 2004, the site is updated a whopping 6-8 times a day, so whether you’re craving a sneak peek into designer’s homes or you want to immerse yourself in the surroundings of a movie, you’ll find it all here. And for those of you with talent at do-it-yourself projects, there’s a section just for you.

2. @bltd

Since 2005, Better Living Through Design has been an online resource for “people interested in great design. We look through hundreds of retail websites each week to find the best products in the design world that are available immediately for purchase online.” And not all of them are out of reach – Flour Sack Towels add a bit of kitsch to the kitchen, while the 2012 Stendig Calendar keeps you up-to-date at all times.

3. @ikeahacks

Funny and yet extremely useful, this site features all the ways to make IKEA furniture work – and rework – in your space. Everything from kitchen cabinets in the bedroom to a hall closet that’s now an organized storage station is illustrated here. The Buddhist Kitchen is especially inspiring, as is the French Country House Library.

I bet you’re looking at IKEA furniture in a whole different way now!

4. @freshome

Freshome may describe itself as showcasing “The latest trends in modern architecture, modern interior design and modern furniture design,” but we’re talking super luxe looks, here. Take the Laranjeiras Residence, for example. Designed by Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados, it’s “a fascinating 10,225 square foot summer retreat located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” Sigh. But they have taken care to include advice for those of us living a “regular” life, with posts such as How to Choose the Perfect Dishwasher for Your Home.

5. @ilovetypography

If you geek out over fonts, you’ll quickly be obsessed with I Love Typography. Type used in art, how to choose a font, and the intricacies of fonts such as Tungsten and exquisite type on napkins, for example.

There are free fonts to be had, as well as interviews with type designers.

Once you start looking at fonts, you’ll clue into them everywhere. And then you’ll be a dedicated font lovers and perhaps get quite upset when Arial is mistaken for Helvetica.
