Turns out Thumper was right: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”
Such was the lesson learned by one Donte Jamar Sims, a 22-year-old man sentenced to six months of prison yesterday for threatening President Obama on Twitter.
Sims, arrested back in September after the U.S. Secret Service found five threatening statements on Twitter from the handle @DestroyLeague_D, was also handed down one year of supervised release by the federal judge in Charlotte, North Carolina who heard his case.
His Twitter feed, with no new updates since September 5, is riddled with tweets supporting Mitt Romney and the RNC. Mashable picked up one of the tweets Sims sent that directly threatened Obama:
Well Ima Assassinate president Obama this evening !… Gotta get this monkey off my chest while he’s in town -_-

You can see in the response chain that another Twitter user alerted the @secretservice to Sims’ message, who had put out a call for citizen alerts to just such messages. It seems like he even had a sixth sense of how his presence on Twitter would play out:
Twitter makes me feel Ashamed to be a Human Being -_-

Do you think there needs to be more interference on Twitter’s part in the case of hate-tweets like these?
