Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have quickly expanded around the globe, and the growing popularity of these platforms in the mobile space has helped to expedite their adoption beyond the western hemisphere.
While just 8.5% of India’s population have access to the internet, the vast size of the country means this accounts for a heady 100 million users. Of these, some 31 million are on Facebook (ranking India as the third-largest Facebook-using country in the world behind the USA and Indonesia) and 13 million on Twitter. Perhaps surprisingly, Orkut holds the number two spot with an impressive 28 million users.
