Both Pinterest and Tumblr have driven more referral traffic to websites than Twitter in the first six months of 2014, with Twitter a distant fourth behind these two social platforms and the all-powerful Facebook, reveals data from StatCounter.
Amongst the top social networks, Facebook has a 67 percent share of referral traffic, more than six times that of second-placed Pinterest (10.38 percent). Tumblr is third with 8.54 percent, while Twitter’s share is just 6.99 percent.

For the record, StatCounter tracks referrals across desktop, mobile, tablet and console, and since August 24, 2011, has been following uses of Twitter’s internal t.co shortener as a means to measure traffic from Twitter. Which means that, while StatCounter can only track websites that use StatCounter, this data should be pretty accurate. After all, StatCounter is in use on 3 million sites – about 2.5 percent of the entire web.
