Incredibly, Twitter Doubled In Size In The U.S. In 2012, Says Study [STATS]

Twitter was the world’s fastest-growing social platform last year, with the micro-blogging network’s 40 percent active user growth between Q2 and Q4 of 2012 more than enough to push Facebook and Google+ into second and third place respectively.

Twitter grew significantly in many countries, with active user gains of more than 50 percent in Hong Kong, Russia and China, but, after a couple of years of stagnation, it’s Twitter’s huge advance in the U.S. that is perhaps its most incredible feat to date.

All-told, Twitter saw a 94 percent jump in active users across the USA in 2012, rising from 33.8 million to 59 million active profiles, which was good enough to rank the States second amongst all countries, behind only Hong Kong, in percentage change.

However, the U.S. was already Twitter’s largest source of users, so this growth, which is close to double, is both important and very, very impressive.

Once again, these findings come courtesy of GlobalWebIndex (see previous coverage here and here), and our previous disclaimer applies: we haven’t seen much about how this data was obtained, so do take the results with the usual hefty pinch, which is becoming very much par for the course with Twitter analytics.

Still, taking this at face value, the ten countries that showed the biggest growth in active users on Twitter in 2012 were:

1. Hong Kong
2. USA
3. Russia
4. China
5. Italy
6. South Korea
7. Argentina
8. Saudi Arabia
9. Spain
10. Japan

According to the study, Brazil, Poland, Vietnam and Taiwan all lost active users last year.
