Rumors have been flying in the past 24 hours about Twitter abandoning their Mac desktop client, Twitter for Mac.
According to TechCrunch writer MG Siegler (@parislemon), Twitter has official made the decision to stop updating Twitter for Mac:
Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won’t kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend.

Twitter for Mac was born of Twitter’s acquisition of Tweetie in April 2009. Since then, Twitter has made the app its own, branding it as the company’s official Mac desktop client.
However, if the rumors are true, Twitter for Mac is no more. Not updating it will effectively kill it off in a few months, or year, tops, if Twitter doesn’t go ahead and just remove it from the App Store completely.
And as 9to5Mac reports, Loren Brichter, the developer of Tweetie, appears not to be fighting the rumor:
@nathan thanks. Ah well.

In light of Twitter’s recent updates to its API guidelines, this slow death of Twitter for Mac is a bit confusing. Twitter made it abundantly clear that it did not approve of developers creating experiences that mimicked Twitter.com – that is, apps that are basically Twitter clients and little else.
So killing off its own, official Twitter client, without offering an alternative to Mac users, is puzzling.
One reason for this approach might be that Twitter is hoping Mac users gravitate towards Twitter.com instead of the desktop app. If ads are appearing more frequently on Twitter.com and are reaching more people, this could improve the company’s bottom line.
Will you be sad to see Twitter for Mac go? If you’re a user, what will you use to replace it?
