What Does SOPA Look Like On Twitter?

Phrases and hashtags like “Stop SOPA and PIPA”, #SOPA, #IfTheyShutDownTwitter, “Why SOPA is dangerous” and #FactsWithoutWikipedia have been hitting Twitter’s trending topics all day today, as websites like Wikipedia and Reddit go dark to protest the US Stop Online Piracy Act.

SOPA has been all the buzz on Twitter, and one intrepid researcher has already created a visual map of how the conversation looks between its most vocal commentators.

Fred Benenson has created a mind map of the relationships between the top mentioned and active names discussing SOPA on Twitter.

He got his hands on 80,000 tweets that contained both a reply and mentioned SOPA. He then ranked the usernames that appeared in these tweets and picked the top 1,000 names.

The map of SOPA mentions shows both the sender and recipient of the tweets. Each node is a user, and the size represents the number of mentions he or she received. The arrows show the direction of the tweet – the node that the arrow points to is the recipient of the mention in a single SOPA-related tweet.

Barack Obama (@BarackObama), you’ll notice, is the largest node, yet none of the arrows point outwards from his circle. This means that the president has been on the receiving end of the most SOPA-related tweets today, but he has little to say about it himself.

There’s still a hefty conversations happening on Twitter about SOPA, so these maps might be updated in the future.

You can take a look at the graph of the most-mentioned names related to SOPA over at fredbenenson.com.
