Half of Americans Have Access To Mobile Internet: Pew

Tablet and smartphone ownership is up in the United States. According to a new report from  Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism in collaboration with The Economist Group, 22 percent of U.S. adults own some kind of tablet computer, which is double the number of people who owned one a year ago.

The study, which included interviews with 9,513 adults conducted from June 29 to August 8, also found that smartphone ownership is up nine points this year, from 35% to 44%. Putting all of these numbers together, Pew has concluded that 50 percent of all Americans now have access to the mobile internet through either a tablet or a smartphone.

These tablet and smartphone owners are using their devices to read the news. According to the report, 64 percent of tablets owners and 62 percent of smartphone owners use the devices to read news at least weekly. The survey found that 54 percent of tablet owners who read the news on their device also get news on a smartphone and 77 percent also read news on a desktop or laptop. Meanwhile, 50 percent of these people get news in print and 25 percent of these people read news on all four platforms.

Here is more about the findings from the press release: “And a third of all U.S. adults now get news on a mobile device at least once a week. And Americans are doing more than just clicking headlines on their mobile devices: 73% of adults who consume news on their tablet read in-depth articles at least sometimes, including 19% who do so daily.”
