Earlier this month MySpace announced that they had relaunched their site as a destination for creative people and along with it they introduced a new app that supports ad-supported music streaming.
In the first week, the company reported having more than 16 million people visit the new site and 35% of that traffic came from mobile devices. In addition, the company revealed to AppNewser that 450,000 people have downloaded the new app. The launch generated quite a bit of buzz online and was one of the top trending items on Twitter during the week it launched.
The new site is designed as a marketing platform for musicians and other creatives. Bands and artists can make pages that promote their work and they can even curate radio stations so that fans can discover music that the bands themselves are listening to, not just discovering simliar artists through tags and algorithms. At launch, MySpace had 25 programmed radio stations from artists including Snoop Dogg, Steve Angello and Justin Timberlake.
