Only About A Third Of Apps Downloaded From App Store: Apptrace

At Apple’s 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple chief Tim Cook announced that the App Store has 650,000 apps and 30 billion app downloads. But according to research from the German startup company Adeven, almost 400,000 apps in the App Store are not downloaded. This would mean that only 250,000 of these apps in the App Store are accounting for the majority of the 30 billion app downloads.

Adeven garnered this information from its new Apptrace tool, a beta-version app tracking website built by developers. Christian Henschel, Adeven CEO, told GigaOM: “The reality is there are only a couple of thousand apps that really make some kind of downloads. This is based on Apple’s closed system — it’s tough to discover those kinds of apps. You don’t have proper search, so the only way to discover new apps is through the top listing.”
