Random House Creates Promotional Calendar App, Murakami Diary

Bibliophiles and fans of Japanese literature might be interested in Random House’s latest promotional app for Haruki Murakami, whose latest paperback IQ84 is coming out on January 22, 2013.

The calendar app’s clean, minimal designs reflect the Japanese author’s post-modernist style. Fans can also share the quotes to their favorite social sites, and purchase books from within the app. Priced at £1.99, this app is clearly intended for serious Murakami fans, the kind that would buy a desktop paper calendar with the same content.

Will publishers offer more apps with simultaneous book releases? We’ve already discussed the nature of free eBooks and whether it is worth the marketing value, but what about apps? This Murakami Diary app is not free, nor does it challenges typical calendar platforms with more narrative structures or interactive features. For the cost, it seems that users would want more – not stories, but depth. As a Murakami reader, I’d like more historical notes, cat imagery, or even some of his musical references.
