Background: In a city where every brick seems to hold historical significance, it makes sense that there's been a Sunday supplement to Boston's leading daily paper, The Boston Globe, for as long as anyone can remember -- or at least as long as the current staff's research could uncover. Editor-in-chief Susanne Althoff,* who has been at the paper since 2003 and served as editor since May, estimates that The Boston Globe Magazine has been around in some form or another for more than a century.

A redesign in March of 2004 remade the magazine in the image of a newsstand glossy rather than a newspaper supplement. The most significant format change was the significantly expanded front-of-book section called "Boston Uncommon." "The old version of The Boston Globe Magazine was missing a traditional front-of-book section," says Althoff. "It had some first-person essays, but it didn't have that easy way for readers to get into the magazine." The revamped FOB gives readers more entry options and mixes a large graphic element -- sidebars, art, illustrations, and photos -- with shorter pieces on current events, food, fashion, celebrities, home design, and dating. ...
