Course Details

Do you find yourself sitting in restaurants editing menus? Will you refuse to shop in a store with a grammatically incorrect sign? Do you respond to your mother's emails with corrections? Turn your editing instinct into a career as a copy editor. In addition to a knack for details, you'll need a range of specific knowledge and skills, including top-notch grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You will need an understanding of commonly used style guides and a basic knowledge of QuarkXPress or InDesign. This seminar will teach you what you need to know to start a copy editing career -- or just feel more confident about wrangling words in any setting.

In this seminar, you will learn:

  • How to refresh your grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills
  • Copy editing and proofreading symbols
  • Common grammatical mistakes to avoid
  • An overview of style guides and how best to use them
  • How to find work as a copy editor
  • The role of the copy editor -- what to expect on the job

Testimonials

Copy Editing Essentials was extremely helpful in explaining the essential elements of copy editing. It covered the technical aspects of grammar and common copy mistakes, along with an overview of publishing and how to become a freelance or full time copy editor. I highly recommend this class. -- Anna Benyo
