Personal Essay Workshop
with Dan Savage

THIS CLASS IS FULL - WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING APPLICATIONS

Finding your voice -- and writing in it -- is a dream of every journalist and fiction writer, yet it is one of the most difficult forms to command. In this 8-week class, master of the genre Dan Savage will teach you how to channel the courage, honesty, introspection, and self-awareness necessary for writing great (and publishable!) personal essays.

Dan Savage is the editor of The Stranger, Seattle's alternative newsweekly, and the award-winning author of Skipping Toward Gomorrah (Lambda Literary Award), The Kid (Pen-West Award), and Savage Love, a collection of his sex advice columns. His work has appeared on the op-ed pages of The New York Times, in the New York Times Magazine, Travel + Leisure, Rolling Stone, Nest, Salon, and other publications. He lives in Seattle with his boyfriend and their five-year-old son.

 

Class rate: $674; $649 for Salon premium members.
Class structure: Personal Essay and Op-Ed Workshop with Dan Savage is a workshop-style class in which you can expect to complete and edit 1-2 personal essaysover 8 weeks. Students (and mainly teacher) will weigh in on each other's work. Added incentive: The best class submission, as judged by the instructor, will be reviewed for publishing consideration on Salon.com
Start date/duration: Class is 8-weeks long, to be held Tuesdays evenings, 7-9:30 p.m. at, beginning January 13.
Class location: This class will be held at Seattle Central Community College in Capitol Hill.
Enrollment:

This class is limited to 14 students. You must send your phone numbers, a letter of interest, including a brief writing and work history with seattleessay/yourname in the subject line to: courses@salon.com. Also include in a fiction writing sample which does not exceed 2,000 words. Send as a Word attachment, or include it in the body of the email. The deadline for applications is Friday, Dec. 12. Note that admissions to this class are rolling, and will therefore be considered first-come, first-serve.
