NYT's Dowd Accused of PlagiarismCorrection: May 18, 2009 That correction is now attached to Maureen Dowd's column from yesterday's NYT following accusations of plagiarism. In an article last Thursday, TPM's Josh Marshall wrote: "More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when we were looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq."Then, on Sunday Dowd wrote: "More and more the timeline is raising the question of why, if the torture was to prevent terrorist attacks, it seemed to happen mainly during the period when the Bush crowd was looking for what was essentially political information to justify the invasion of Iraq." Dowd changed just three words from Marshall's "we were" to "the Bush crowd." So, why not credit Marshall from the beginning? Dowd claims that while talking to a friend on Friday, they suggested she make Marshall's point without ever attributing the thought to Marshall's blog: "My friend must have read josh marshall without mentioning that to me," Dowd told HuffPo. I have a "friend" like that but he's pretty annoying. He only comes around when he needs me to place a call or do something embarrassing on his behalf. His name is Natthew. Email This Post |
