TV Reaction To Politico Story

Some of the reaction from television news channels to the original "Edwards suspending campaign" piece:

CNN at 11:42:

"According to Politico.com we are hearing that John Edwards will suspend his campaign for President and may drop out completely because his wife Elizabeth has again, according to politico.com, suffered a reoccurrence of the cancer that made her sick first in 2004- this is breast cancer. This is what we are hearing now. At a minimum he is going to suspend that campaign and no one knows exactly right now how serious this recurrence is. CNN of course is always looking to confirm this, but at this moment, politico.com is reporting John Edwards will suspend his campaign for president because his wife has suffered a reoccurence of breast cancer."

CNN at 11:46:07

HEIDI: "We have been learning about a report that has come out of Politico.com regarding what will be said in that news conference."

MARY SNOW: "That's right Heidi, Politico is quoting sources, friends close to the Edwards, that Edwards is suspending his campaign for president and may drop out completely because as Politico is reporting, his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that had made her sick back in 2004. Both John Edwards and Elizabeth Edwards are expected here very shortly an aide to the Edwards campaign said that this is their decision to do this together and this was a family issue that they wanted to get this news out themselves. They want to be the firsts to talk about it so again we're expecting them, not far from where they live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Of course, Elizabeth Edwards battle with cancer, such a public battle, she has talked about it, she wrote a book about it, was diagnosed just as the 2004 campaign had ended."

The full full text of what was on MSNBC.com (they took down the story -– this was all that was left):

MSNBC--"John Edwards to Suspend Presidential Campaign"” (also linked on CNBC)

"Democrat John Edwards is suspending his US president campaign, and many drop out completely because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that..."

Carl Cameron on FNC at 1130AM.ET

"There's a large level of speculation that suggests that what Mr. Edwards may do today is suspend his candidacy at least temporarily -- not drop out of their race per say, not continue it, but find some degree of a middle ground. His aides -- some have been told what Mrs. Edwards's condition is. Others have not. They have made it very clear to the staff that this is a family health-related announcement that Elizabeth and John Edwards want to make themselves, and they want to speak for themselves and they want to do it first to the media as a collective, not one at a time, so they can address all the questions at once. This is obviously a very delicate moment. It is unlikely, it is uncommon that they would call a news conference to say that everything is fine and the campaign goes on according to pace, and yet, we just do not know."

Carl Cameron on FNC at 11:58AM/ET

"Earlier this week, Mr. Edwards canceled one campaign event in Iowa in order to come back to North Carolina and be with his wife for additional test results. They will discuss the results of that test and the campaigns' future in the next few minutes. If Mr. Edwards does indeed go forward and suspend his campaign temporarily, it will of course shake up the situation on the campaign trail dramatically where Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been in a very tough fight. If Mr. Edwards does indeed go forward and suspend his campaign temporarily, it will of course shake up the situation on the campaign trail dramatically where Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been in a very tough fight, already in this very early stage of the campaign. If Mr. Edwards is indeed to announce that he suspends it, he presumably will be coming back once Mrs. Edwards again given a clean bill of health by doctors. And that assumes that she has gotten one right now. There are a lot of mixed signals coming from the campaign, from around the country, not just here in North Carolina, and a great deal of speculation, from the political as well as a very personal level. Elizabeth Edwards became a nationally known figure as the spouse of a democratic running mate in 2004, a common sense individual was very well known for her candor and likeability. It is almost inconceivable that she would allow her husband to cancel his campaign or step back from it because of her commitment to the country and her commitment to his candidacy and his potential presidency."
