A major shake-up in the two-month-old D.C. Examiner this morning: Publisher James McDonald has left the fledgling news organization and is being replaced by Herbert W. Moloney III, a high-level marketing, advertising, and printing executive.

McDonald had been publisher of the Journal Newspaper group and stayed on to transition it to the Examiner. According to the announcement, he'll stay involved in the company, although his exact role is unclear.

"Now that The Examiner has been firmly established, there could be no better person for leading the business forward than Herb Moloney. He combines major newspaper experience with a brilliant reputation for innovation in marketing and advertising," the CEO of the holding company running the Examiner said.

For the last five years, Moloney has been COO of Vertis North America, a "target marketing company," where he oversaw over 8,000 employees, more than 100 production and sales facilities, and about $1.6 billion in sales.

Moloney, who during twenty years with Knight Ridder has had stints on the business side of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Miami Herald, also sits on the board of directors of Lee Enterprises, the newspaper group that just bought the Pulitzer chain.
