How many suits do you own? Four What word do you routinely misspell? Let's just say radio can mask a vibrant alternate universe of spelling. What's the name of your cell phone ring? Buzz. What time did you get up this morning? 7:45 a.m. When did you last cry and why? Can't remember, but it's very likely it was listening to one of the "StoryCorps" pieces on NPR. They're powerful personal histories told by regular people about themselves. (Here's a recent moving segment). Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail. What single person played the biggest role / had the biggest influence on your journalism career? I worked under Bill Hawkins at the Durham Herald-Sun, under John Carroll at the Baltimore Sun and under Bill Marimow at the Sun and NPR. All three, in various and important ways, took a chance in hiring me and all three encouraged my career. I greatly appreciate each of them for it. But I also have learned - and hope I am still learning – a ton from the many extremely talented and generous colleagues I've encountered at all three places - the reporters and editors and, now at NPR, the producers and engineers as well. Who's your all-time favorite American Idol candidate? Dennis Kucinich. Who is your favorite active journalist? I cover the media, so I'll take a pass on that. Email This Post |
