Morning Reading List, 04.06.07

morningsun.gifGood morning Washington.

  • The quarter is by far the favorite coin. Laundry is a big driver. (Says one tipster: "A death knell? 114 reporters took the time today to vote for their favorite coin.")

  • "The Politics of Pundit Prestige..."

  • BtoB reports, "The number of media deals rose nearly 10% in the first quarter, compared with the year-earlier period, while the value declined slightly, according to a report by media investment bank Jordan, Edmiston Group. Online media deals totaled 72, up from 42, while the value declined."

  • Don Graham's got jury duty.

  • WBBM reports, "If all goes according to plan, multi-billionaire real estate investor Sam Zell will take over Tribune by year's end. He says he's an avid reader of newspapers and thinks they have a profitable future in the age of the Internet."

  • Bob Schieffer's new CD is out. "The chicks love it!"

  • Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni reports, "A total of 145 new magazines were introduced to the American magazine scene in the first quarter of 2007. This is a drop of 47 titles from 2006."

  • The Editorialiste calls the new New York Times blog, "The Graduates," "the best idea I've seen in The Times in awhile -- but I think it's the worst execution I've seen in the Times in that same period of time."

  • Imaginova Corp. is hiring a General Assignment Reporter.

  • Intelligence Press, Inc is looking for "an experienced business reporter."

  • National Defense Magazine is looking for "a full-time graphics/production assistant."

  • Connection Newspapers is looking for a Sports Writer/Editor.

  • Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter & Associates is hiring a Managing Associate/Managing Director.

  • The McGraw-Hill Companies is hiring a Web Managing Editor-Aviation Week.

  • A tipster tells us, "Time magazine has an article in the most recent edition on how applications to the House page program have increased since the Foley scandal. Didn't The Politico have that story like two months ago? Time does not credit The Politico."

  • Washington Business Journal reports, "Arnold Corporate Communications, the public relations division of Arnold Worldwide, has been hired as the public relations agency of record for Gannett's USA Today."

  • The New York Times reports, "Discovery Communications, the cable channel operator, plans to start a 24-hour channel focused on eco-friendly living, as part of a push into the rising environmental movement."

  • From today's Washington Post. From The Politco in March.

  • A reader brings our attention to this: "This looks worthy of coverage -- from William F. Buckley's column yesterday: College and HS students organizing to create their own political coverage that focuses and responds to a different kind of news consumer. Looks pretty innovative. And quirky. And does this say something about young people in this coming election? It's been years since we've seen them so interested. Here's their site."

  • A reader asks, "Hi, is Chris Mincher married, single, or attached? He's a cutie. How can I contact him?"

  • DCRTV reports that there is a "mass exodus" of news people from American University's mainly news and talk WAMU (88.5 FM). "Two have left and two more have given notice and are 'actively job hunting.' We're told that there's 'major unhappiness with new news director. Just as they are enjoying being the only public radio news outlet with WETA returning to classical, they seem to be shooting themselves in the foot.' Says another WAMU source: 'They will soon be down to just one fulltime and one parttime reporter. WAMU management plans to dumb-down local news by replacing fulltime professional reporters with interns from American University'....."

  • The latest installment of Pew's weekly News Interest Index "finds that most Americans have little or no confidence in the information they receive about the war in Iraq -- from either the U.S. military or the press. Public confidence in both institutions is much lower now than at the outset of the war, and opinions are much more divided along partisan lines."

  • Pew also released a survey showing, "News Leaks Remain Divisive, but Libby Case Has Little Impact."
