"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Payne Leaving Health

From the Post's internal announcement:

January Payne is leaving the Health section to become the editor of Managed Care Week, which specializes in providing news, data and strategic information about the evolving business of health care. We'll miss her warmth and unerring common sense, but she will be working just a couple of blocks from here and promises to stay in touch.

January leaves a hole in our staff. Since she started here in 2004 as a Kaiser intern, she has focused readers' attention on economic disparities in the provision of health care, she's tracked the development of health-related Web sites, she's alerted us to the health concerns of younger readers--and she's always kept the consumer in mind.

With January's imminent departure, Health has an opening for an energetic reporter to build on those interests. We are a small group, which makes this job a great opportunity to contribute to The Post in multiple ways—as a reporter, a wpni presence, a video producer and a radio commentator, among others.

We're looking for somebody who is comfortable writing news stories and features, both for the newspaper and online, and who is prepared to grapple with the fast-changing dynamics of consumer-driven health care. The ideal candidate would not only be an excellent reporter and wordsmith, but be ready to work with graphics to present complicated science visually. And in our continuing effort to make the coverage of health more coherent across National, Metro, Financial and Health, we are looking for somebody who has the ambition to write for all of those sections.
