Post Names New Food Editor

From the Wash Post:

    New Food Editor

    Joe Yonan
, a talented editor and experienced food journalist, will be the new editor of the Food section. Joe will join us Oct. 1 from the Boston Globe where he's been a food writer for the past two years. His stories are full of the delight Joe has for this subject. He has followed five Italian chefs (four of them named Tony) as they hunted for their pheasant dinner, tested gadgets from a tomato peeler (it works!) to an automated espresso maker (it doesn't!), and eaten 27 items from 23 outdoor food carts in five days.

Joe started at the Globe as a copy editor on the news desk, during which time he spent a year attending the Cambridge School of Culinary
Arts by day and then writing headlines and laying out pages at night. He later was assistant metro editor for presentation, acting as a liaison between the graphics and photo departments and the City-Region reporters and editors. As the Globe’s travel editor, he
won national awards for his remaking of the section, then did the same withspecial sections on cars, careers and skiing. All along, Joe
wrote about food in his spare time, creating columns on kitchen gadgets and new restaurants for the paper’s Home and Weekend sections, respectively. He has continued to contribute to the Travel section, writing features on Rhode Island wieners (don't call them hot dogs!), food shopping in Montreal and eating salsas in Austin in August. He has also written monthly reviews of New England inns.

When he moved to Boston 17 years ago, Joe was an education reporter and later, graveyard-shift editor in the suburbs. He moved to
Peterborough, N.H., to be editor-in-chief of a regional weekly newspaper and then returned to Boston in 1993 to edit the South End News, a weekly in a neighborhood that has long been home to the city's best restaurants.

Joe was born in Albany, Georgia, raised in San Angelo, Texas, and earned his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1989 from the University of Texas at Austin. We are delighted to welcome him to The Post.
