Layoffs At Evite

1evite.jpgOur sister blog Webnewser has the disheartening news:

Evite laid off nine of its 38 employees as part of a reorganization by its parent company, IAC, paidContent reported.

Among those affected were general manager Rosanna McCollough and vice president of marketing Lariayn Payne.

After hearing about the layoffs, we felt a pang of guilt when RSVPing to a birthday party via Evite rival Socializr. Evite will always be our first choice for events when inviting folks to %#$@! stubborn to join Facebook.

Drex Heikes To Be New Editor at LA Weekly

heikes.jpg

From the LA Weekly blog:

Long-time Los Angeles journalist Drex Heikes will return to California this summer to become LA Weekly's next editor. His homecoming follows another happy event: his acceptance last month of the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service on behalf of the Las Vegas Sun for an investigation he assigned and edited.

During an 18-year career at the Los Angeles Times, Heikes served as editor of the Sunday magazine--where he directed both long-form news journalism and the coverage of local arts and culture--and as foreign affairs editor in the paper's Washington bureau. He spent the fall of 2001 in New York City supervising the Times' coverage of the World Trade Center attacks.

Welcome back home Heikes.

Entrepreneur Mag Mass Exodus

11entre.jpgFour staff members of Irvine-based Entrepreneur magazine and Entrepreneur.com asked for - and received - buyouts this week. But why would Associate Editor Kim Orr, Research Editor James Park, Associate Web Editor Elizabeth Wilson, and Associate Editor of Franchise Allison Gergley all walk away from staff positions at a time when most journalists are desperate for work? We've heard rumor that Editor in Chief Amy Cosper is a nightmare to work for, but we're fuzzy on the details. Know something? Email us!

Gabe Doppelt to Head Daily Beast's New Bureau in LA

gabe.png

From WWD Media:

MOVING ON: Tina Brown and Gabe Doppelt are reuniting for the third time, as Doppelt leaves as W's West Coast bureau chief to join The Daily Beast, founded by Brown at InterActiveCorp. Doppelt, a former editor in chief of Mademoiselle and VH1 producer, began her career as Brown's assistant at Tatler and was an editor at large at Brown's short-lived Talk. (She's also godmother to Brown's daughter.) "I don't think Tina's ever thought I was off the payroll," said Doppelt. "It came as a surprise to her that I wasn't still working for her."

Doppelt will be hiring reporters for the new bureau and will be working out of IAC's Los Angeles building.

W chairman and editorial director Patrick McCarthy (who also oversees sister title WWD) said in an e-mail to staff that "Gabe, who has been with W for eight years, has done an incredible job and we will miss her tremendously. A successor will be announced in due course."

Woot.

1dalmatian.jpgFrom our sister blog GalleyCat:

Today Dalmatian Publishing Group decided to shutter Santa Monica offices of its Intervisual Books and Piggy Toes Press, moving the groups to the company's Atlanta office.

According to Publishers Weekly, the publisher is re-organizing in the wake of the move. Intervisual and Piggy Toes publisher Debra Mostow Zakarin will not make the Atlanta move, instead she will take an "editor-at-large" role in the company. Piggy Toes Press' list included children's books like "Hush-a-Bye Counting" and Intervisual's list included fill-in-the-blanks books like "My Life: A Book About Me"

Al Martinez Column Resurfaces At The Daily News

almart1.jpgAfter being dropped from the LA Times in January, popular columnist Al Martinez has found a new home at the Daily News. From Kevin Roderick at LA Observed:

Martinez's debut DN column is about his daughters, one of whom is undergoing chemotherapy. Having his column run in the Daily News is a homecoming of sorts - for many years Martinez's column was based in the Times' old Valley edition.

Editor-In-Chief Laurie Ochoa Leaving LA Weekly

BREAKING: Just got the lousy news that editor-in-chief Laurie Ochoa is leaving the LA Weekly. No idea if she was fired or finally just lost patience with the tomfoolery of the paper's owners. Release is below:

For Immediate Release: LA Weekly, Editor to Part Ways

The LA Weekly is announcing that Editor in Chief Laurie Ochoa and the paper are parting ways after eight years.

A former intern, contributor, and special sections editor at the LA Weekly from 1984-1988, Ochoa returned to take over the editor in chief role in 2001.

LA Weekly wishes her luck in all future endeavors.

LA Weekly is actively searching for Editor in Chief candidates who will continue LA Weekly's legacy of journalistic excellence while expanding its online presence.

Since 1978, LA Weekly has been decoding Los Angeles for its readers, infiltrating its subcultures, observing and analyzing its shifting rhythms, digging up its unreported stories and confronting the city's political leaders. LA Weekly has won more awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies than any other paper in the country, and in 2007 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for criticism by food writer Jonathan Gold.
