Saturday night, a second critical book on the Clintons following the release of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices was leaked to press 10 days ahead of its publishing date.
Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine, written by the Weekly Standard’s Online Editor Daniel Halper, was distributed to more than 100 reporters by the mysterious “Robert Josef Wright” as a combined 317-page PDF.
The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove says of the former President and potential 2016 Democratic Presidential candidate, as portrayed in the book, “Perhaps surprisingly, it’s Bill Clinton who emerges as selfish and coldly calculating in the portrait drawn by Halper’s reporting, and Hillary who comes off as warm and caring, albeit charmingly transactional for political gain, particularly with her Republican colleagues in the Senate.”
The leak has turned into an issue for publisher HarperCollins, who likely had its own marketing campaign in place including a planned appearance for Halper on “The O’Reilly Factor.”
Grove goes on to differentiate Halper’s book from Ed Klein‘s latest Blood Feud, saying, “Unlike scandal-monger Ed Klein’s fantastical No. 1 best-selling narrative about the supposed Blood Feud between the Clintons and the Obamas, Halper’s study is juicy and gossipy, yet scrupulously researched, drawing on numerous on-the-record conversations (as well as many not-for-attribution interviews) with prominent Democrats and Clinton insiders, past and present.”
