Chuck Todd Gets Advice from Sen. John McCain on ‘Meet the Press’ Hosting Duties

Screen Shot 2014-08-27 at 11.58.26During his final week as host of “The Daily Rundown” before taking over as “Meet the Press” moderator, Chuck Todd‘s Rundown has featured surprise guests coordinated by producers including Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) this morning.

McCain, the most popular “MTP” guest in terms of his number of appearances, was on hand to offer advice to Todd in his new role.

Asked by Todd what he thinks the role of “Meet the Press” has been and should be in Washington and for America, McCain responded, “I think it has been not just the oldest, but the premier Sunday encounter that the American people can have with leading figures in the political world. I would suggest that rather than try to expand it and do all kinds of different issues and subjects and kind of cute little anecdotes, that we really do what you do best, and that is focus on the political dynamics that are going on in this country, which then means, ‘What are our policies. What are the dynamics’.”

Referring to the late Tim Russert, who served as moderator for 17 years, McCain added, “One of the things about Tim is that he had really the best minds in America, but not on every subject, but particularly on what was going on in Washington, DC. Because I think that’s what the original purpose of ‘Meet the Press’ was.”

In a Sunday New York Times piece, NBC president Deborah Turness said of “Meet the Press” that, “The show needs more edge…It needs to be consequential. I think the show had become a talking shop that raked over the cold embers of what had gone on the previous week.”
