Politico Rescues Romano from The Beast

The Daily Beast‘s Howie Kurtz may have convinced longtime WaPo reporter Lois Romano to join him at The Beast in April 2011. But now, not even a year later, she has left him for Politico. In a notice today that appeared on the site’s On Media blog, brass announced that Romano has been hired as a senior political reporter. They call her one of “Washington’s most accomplished” journos.

“Lois’s presence in our newsroom will allow us to do types of stories that in the past might have been out of our reach,” writes Editor-in-Chief John Harris.

Romano spent 28 years at WaPo.

We have been out big-game hunting, and there aren’t many bigger than this: Lois Romano, one of Washington’s most accomplished journalists, is joining POLITICO as a senior political reporter.

Lois comes to us from Newsweek/DailyBeast, where she has been covering the presidential election. During her career, which included 28 years at The Washington Post, Lois has covered eight presidential campaigns and five administrations. She started in The Post’s Style section, writing profiles on Washington’s biggest power players, and pioneered some of the paper’s most successful ventures – including the launch of “The Reliable Source” and The Post’s first online video interview series.

As this resume suggests, Lois has a special talent for understanding and illuminating the human dimension of politics. At bottom, politics is a great subject to cover because it is about people—their visions, their ambitions, their quirks, their relationships, their styles and values. Lois’s presence in our newsroom will allow us to do types of stories that in the past might have been out of our reach. She’s got a great eye, and a set of source relationships that go deep into Washington.

She starts Monday, Feb. 20. Please join us in welcoming Lois, who is already a friend of ours and of many people in our newsroom.
