Rep. Quayle Didn’t Mean to Smack Politico Quite so Hard

The weird news of the day comes out of Rep. Ben Quayle‘s (R-Ariz.) office: His press secretary is a former Politico employee Richard Cullen. He was VandeHarris’ assistant for a year and a half.

We wondered if he hates Politico as much as his boss, who remarked that Politico is the worst publication in history last night during his speech at the Radio & TV Association’s Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner.

Sure enough, Cullen doesn’t, and Quayle’s office appears to be extending an olive branch. During the 2010 cycle, the congressional candidate had an ad campaign saying “Barack Obama is the worst president in history.” The press secretary told FishbowlDC: “More than anything, the congressman was poking fun at himself for his ‘worst in history’ campaign ad. Did the joke go over the way it was intended? No. Rep. Quayle does not hold a grudge against Politico.”

We’ll see if Politico returns the love.
