Stengel, Ratnesar and Isaacson.

Former chief counsel to President Obama Greg Craig made one of his first public appearances, since his announced departure, last night at a book party for Time's Romesh Ratnesar.

The Aspen Institute's Walter Isaacson and his wife Cathy Isaacson threw the mag's deputy managing editor at a party at their home to toast "Tear Down This Wall."

Isaacson had big news of his own to celebrate-- he was named by Obama to chair the Broadcast Board of Governors.

In attendance: Time managing editor Rick Stengel, Mark Whitaker, Ben Bradlee, Sally Quinn, Michelle Jaconi, Sam Feist and Tammy Haddad.

Where Are They Now? Campaign Embeds Relive the Trail's Glory Days

Cox, Hovell, Summers, Aigner-Treworgy and Memoli. Photo courtesy of Campus Progress.

Ana Marie Cox moderated a panel discussion with former 2008 presidential campaign embed reporters at GWU this week, in conjunction with Campus Progress and the Institute for Politics.

The first panel was made up of ABC's Bret Hovell, former NBC embed turned "Colbert Report" researcher Adam Aigner-Treworgy, Newsweek's Nick Summers and former Biden embed turned RealClearPolitics White House reporter Mike Memoli.

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell, former Hillary Clinton campaign staffer Jamie Smith and former McCain campaign staffer Justin Germany rounded out the second panel.

We learned they can identify hotel chains by just the carpet, they gained and lost a second freshman fifteen, supplied campaign staffers with booze (something O'Donnell calls "a great journalism tradition") and even managed to break some news along the way...

But would they do it again? They all agreed it'd be hard to beat the historic nature of the '08 campaign, but answers were mixed on whether they'd go back.

"You swear you'll never do it again, but there is a certain sexiness to being out there," Summers said. Germany's also in, "it's the Superbowl of politics." Hovell was a hard no.

Among those not receiving GWU credit to attend... Congress Daily's Erin McPike who covered the Romney campaign for NBC and the National Journal, msnbc.com's Carrie Dann who was embeded in Iowa for NBC/NJ, Roll Call's Tricia Miller who covered the Edwards campaign for NBC/NJ and WaPo's Perry Bacon.

Fishbowl 5: Washington Life's Kris Apodaca

Washington Life's November issue is all about the "creatives." So, what better month to introduce their new art director, Kris Apodaca? FishbowlDC was able to pull her way from Photoshop for a few minutes to talk design, visual changes to Washington Life and the artistic side of editorial.

What's your background? I moved to DC last year from Denver, looking for a different opportunity in print editorial design. My experience is mainly with home design and lifestyle magazines. I was ready to expand my portfolio and the Washington Life opportunity presented itself at the right time.

From an artistic standpoint, how does editorial content look the best? Content should be easy to navigate and digest. Don't make the reader work too hard to get the information, but don't insult them by over-simplifying. And of course it should always be beautiful.

How is design of a society mag different from home/garden? The home design magazines where I've worked are about quiet elegance - creating an indulgent mood, something to aspire to. My Washington Life experience so far calls for a more vibrant sophistication. The writing reflects the rich history behind and current state of Washington D.C. society, the bright and beautiful galas and parties, the shopping, fashion and homes... All of this combines to create very engaging content. It's exciting to jump into each issue as part of such a focused editorial team.

What changes should we expect to see under your artistic guidance? Still clean and stylish but with a little more color, a little more energy. Although Washington Life is considered a regional publication, we are competing against national magazines, and distributed nationally as well, so the design has to be on par with national newsstand titles. That's what our readers can expect to see moving forward.

As an art director, what are your favorite magazines and why? There are so many. I'm such a magazine junkie. Right now I love Wired. It grabs me by the shoulders, gives me a good shake and leaves me with useful stuff in my head. And I will always love Australian Vogue Living - decadent and never stuffy.

TWT's Slevin Addresses Miniter Allegations

This evening, Jonathan Slevin, TWT's acting publisher addressed staff via memo about accusations of discrimination, an EEOC complaint filed by Richard Miniter and rumors about the pub in the "blogosphere."

In the memo, Slevin requests of his staff, "that during this time of transition you read certain newspaper and blog reports about this organization with a discerning eye."

If I may be so bold...I'd like to suggest that TWT begins communicating with their staff and the journalists that cover their organization less than two business days after scandalous stories about the paper hit the Web. I mean, really?
