As the famous saying goes, if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog. Not this dog, mind you. Status: Already taken.

Which journo has the cutest dog in Washington?

Find out who after the jump…

P.S. If you think we’re wrong and that yours is actually the cutest dog in Washingon, send in your photographs. We’d love to see. Send to FishbowlDC@mediabistro.com or to FishbowlBetsy@gmail.com.

> Update #1: Politico‘s newbee Dan Hirschhorn thinks he’s got the cutest dog. “Even though I’m new to the DC press corps (I started at POLITICO just a few weeks ago), I would not-so-humbly submit that no Beltway journalist could possibly have a cuter dog than my little Penny.” Meet Penny below.

> Update #2: We have another contender. FBDC’s Matt Dornic writes in, “Betsy, while I respect Penny and her adorableness, I must insist that you reconsider any further K-9 cuteness honors until you reacquaint yourself with Cooper aka “Smalls.”  As you know, I have three but Cooper (attached) is most certainly the cutest dog in Washington.” Meet Cooper below.

> Update #3: The Washington Examiner‘s White House correspondent Julie Mason is throwing her pooch into the ring. “This is outrageous. Who are these effete gentlemen with their tiny little poodles with sad eyes? My Australian cattle dog, Gomez, will fight those dogs (right after his nap) and win.” Meet Gomez below.

> Update #4: Amanda Carpenter, speechwriter and Communications Advisor to Sen. Jim DeMint, submits her dog Wiki. She likes to go to tea parties (the dog and maybe Carpenter, too). Meet Wiki below.

> Update #5: NPR‘s Julie Rovner brings Gromit into the contest. Meet Gromit below.

> Update #6: Qorvis’s Jessica Baer thinks her Gizmo is cutest. She says, “You can find him on the lawn of the Library of Congress and strutting all over the hill, of course in a manly way!” Meet Gizmo below.

> Update #7: Stephanie Kotuby, senior booker for CNN, says the other dogs have nothing on Piper. Meet Piper below.

The original Cutest Dog in Washington belongs to Media Matters Contributor Karl Frisch, whose dog is being mightily challenged. His dog is pictured on the first page of this post.

And just because he’s so cute, here’s another picture of Dexter Von Frisch.
