On Friday, like many other Angelenos, TheWrap film critic Alonso Duralde was keeping watch on the crazy progress of the LA arson fires:
Two days later, Duralde was sharing some much more harrowing fire-related news. Among the carports hit on the night of December 30 was that of the rent-controlled West Hollywood apartment he shares with husband-author Dave White (Exile in Guyville):
A fundraising campaign has since been launched on Duralde and White’s behalf to cover vehicle repair and-or replacement costs. The fundraising pitch begins:
That is Alonso’s car in the LA Times main news photo about this one-night 20-incident arson outbreak that caught our dear friends’ vehicles in its flames… Their apartment didn’t burn, but is filled with smoke smell and will take some TLC to get back to normal as well. One of their two cars was insured, the other wasn’t.
The (comprehensive) insurance coverage referenced above is for White’s 2002 Mazda Miata; Duralde had only liability for his 1998 VW Bug. Among those leaving messages on the ChipIn.com page at press time was publicist Marina Bailey, who has offered to give Duralde a ride to screenings.
Update – 01/07/12: Remarkably, in just a few days, a total of 181 contributors has pushed the online fundraising campaign past $11,000. Duralde comments: “I just wanted to let everyone know how flabbergasted I am by the generosity of friends (and strangers, even) in our time of need. You make me less cynical and more inclined to buy into Frank Capra.”
