New LA Times Editor Making Trinidad Proud

Here in LA, coverage of the upcoming holiday season transition of top editors at the LA Times has been couched in all sorts of negative context about the state of daily newspapers. But back home in Trinidad, the native country of Russ Stanton successor Davan Maharaj, it’s a different story.

Reader comments to an article about the appointment published in the Trinidad Express, where Maharaj (pictured) was once a reporter, are buoyed by patriotic pride. One reader notes that Maharaj is the son of a sugar cane union organizer, while another suggests the journalist’s ascension is a clarion call:

Always good to hear positive news from a son of the soil. And that we know he got where he is today not because his father knows somebody, or somebody knows his father, but by hard work and determination with devout dedication to duty as opposed to nepotism. Job well done and accolades well deserved. Hopefully he will be a beacon for some of our country folks who only know how to achieve their goals the old-fashioned way.

Reader @DonS_NY meanwhile is already looking far ahead, hoping that once the 49-year-old Maharaj completes his stateside career, he can return to Trinidad to teach journalism.
