Long Beach Post Publisher Dies in Florida Car Crash
Long Beach Post co-founder and publisher Shaun Lumachi died late Saturday night in a Florida car crash.
The 33-year-old was attending the National Workforce Association’s conference in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Press-Telegram has the details on the accident:
David Sommers, a close friend of Lumachi ever since the two attended Sacramento State University together, said that Lumachi and two others traveling to the conference had taken a late-night flight to Florida and driven to Key West for the day before the conference was to begin.
On Saturday morning, the group was returning to the mainland along a causeway when a pickup truck going the opposite direction veered across the road, Sommers said. The driver of Lumachi’s vehicle swerved and the truck hit the back, left side of the car, where Lumachi was sitting.
The other two in the vehicle — identified by the city of Long Beach as Workforce Investment Board member Larry Rice and city staff member Erick Serrato — were treated at a hospital and released, sources said.
“Shaun’s like a brother to me. We’ve just been friends, confidants. He’s just been an incredible person,” said councilman Robert Garcia, who co-founded the Long Beach Post with Lumachi. “He certainly was the most talented guy I’ve ever met.”
The publication, which launched a print edition in April, will live on despite this tragedy.
“There’s no question in my mind that the Post will go on and the Post will continue to grow in Shaun’s vision,” Garcia said.
