Union-Tribune Blogger Quits… on Her First Day

There is a new journalism hero in San Diego. Her name is Katherine Sweetman, and the reason for this artist, filmmaker and teacher’s sudden popularity is an in-your-face Sunday November 7th blog post on the website of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The original post, “An Introduction/Resignation (A Small Gesture)”, has since been removed. But thanks to the Internet, it is available elsewhere as a sweet reminder of how the prof’s debut as a visual arts beat blogger was suddenly derailed by her conscience.

Arts are very important to the Union-Tribune but… so is money. I accepted one of these [new, no-pay arts blog] positions. It was exciting. There were no rules, no journalistic constraints, no editors, no… tech support. We knew right away we were special…

And then it hit us. We hate the Union-Tribune. We hate the way they abruptly ended the tenure of the most important arts critic in San Diego’s history (Robert Pincus). We hate James Chute‘s pathetic coverage of artists – which just makes us look bad (seriously, read his stuff)…

Sweetman knows a thing or two about worthwhile free projects. Check out her very cool planned installation on the U.S.-Mexico border.
