In an attempt to take on the AP and CNN, Thomson Reuters has announced the creation of a new U.S. domestic news service its calling Reuters America. The service will provide text, photos, videos from Reuters journos, as well as sports and entertainment coverage from a series of partner organizations– including The Wrap, SportsDirect, the Sports Xchange, US Presswire, SB Nation and Examiner.com.
Tribune Company has signed on as the startup’s first client. Which means we may be seeing stories from The Wrap in the L.A. Times in the not too distant future. It’s been reported that as a result of the deal, Tribune Co. will slash its $9 million annual AP budget in half.
