These are some pretty impressive numbers.
According to a press release issued today, the brand new Internet incarnation of “The Tom Leykis Show” garnered a total of 401,180 listeners during the program’s first week. The specificity of that mark echos something Leykis told us when we interviewed him last fall; namely, that he was excited to be seguing to a medium where audience numbers for an individual program can be totaled much more accurately than the benchmarks of commercial radio ratings books.
That’s Leykis, above, from a recent promo appearance on Studio 11 LA. During April 2-9, “The Tom Leykis Show” registered an average 15-minute-period audience of 1,575. Says Tom: “These numbers are way higher than what we’d anticipated… Kind of makes you wonder what competing alternative content like this will ultimately mean for radio.”
He’s absolutely right about that. Although the pendulum has swung in favor of archived podcast content, Leykis’ daily 3 p.m. PT vanguard effort could show others the live, Internet way. Provided, as he is the first to remind on air, that advertiser and subscriber support can be properly maintained. Another interesting factoid: during the show’s first week, listeners clicked in from 105 different countries and territories.
The live show is free, but to pull up archived programs, website visitors must pay a fee of $9.99 per month or $99.99 a year. From 5 to 7 p.m. PT Thursdays, Leykis has also resurrected his professorial advice feature “Leykis 101.”
