BuzzFeed Names Miriam Elder Foreign and National Security Editor

BuzzFeed has named Miriam Elder as its first foreign and national security editor. Elder comes to BuzzFeed from The Guardian, where she served as Moscow correspondent. Elder had been in Moscow since 2006.

“Miriam is a great journalist and social web native who has an great sense both for news and for the next big story, as her coverage of the recent political protest in Russia — on the web, and on Twitter — has shown,” Ben Smith, editor of BuzzFeed, said in a statement. “Her deep roots in international news will be vital to bringing this coverage to a new medium and through new forms.”

Elder will be based in New York and begins July 25.
