Media Minutiae, Attend The Tale of Sweeney Todd Edition

  • Out, out, damn editor, out I say! Jossip's David Hauslaib reports that Out editor Brandon Lemon has departed the magazine, up and quitting yesterday in a surprise move. Apparently the resignation was entirely voluntary; at a meeting of staffers, Lemon explained that he'd done all he could do with the book. Josspip also links to Lemon's last interview as Out EIC, on alterna-Hauslaib hangout Queerty. [Jossip]

  • For me, well, I wouldn't holler if [s]he were as handsome as anything! Apparently Fox News is in the unsolicited matchmaking business. Rush & Molloy lead today with a bizarro story of James Rosen finishing an interview with Condoleeza Rice by telling her about Fox News anchor Lauren Green, whom he said was "brilliant, she's beautiful, she's African-American, she's single and she's a concert pianist in her spare time." This, by the way, is the sort of stuff you just can't make up. UPDATE: The story was first reported in Radar Online's "Fresh Intelligence" section. Good eye, Radar! Clearly yours is better than ours. No offense meant. [Radar]

  • CJR: Reading the New Yorker so you don't have to: CJR's Gal Beckerman by reading and reporting on Ken Auletta's examination of the Los Angeles Times in this week's New Yorker, which he says he says (Beckerman/Auletta) became a mess of scattershot initiatives (wiki, anyone?) and an us-vs.-them attitude between journos and suits. He also confirms what many perusers of Harper's covers suspected: Ben Marcus is a tad on the cranky side, taking it out on Jonathan Franzen and his reading public.

  • The Belle of the Blogs Books: We're awfully proud of Fishbowl's and MB's own Elizabeth Spiers, whom Page Six reports has a hot-property novel at auction -- and they'd know because they're right 99% of the time. In other news, Lauren Weisberger, we're the only ugly little lesbian blogger at Fishbowl! And you just lost your shot with us. P.S. This Canadian is underwhelmed as well. [NYP]

  • Nothing's gonna charm you, not while I'm around: We almost choked reading Lowdown's account of Chris Noth singing showtunes in our former haunt and place of employ, West Village piano bar Marie's Crisis. It's super fun, especially if you love lustily singing out every showtune in the book, and apparently Noth thinks so, too, because Lowdown spied him sereneding a female patron with "a soulful baritone" (NB we're not sure if Noth or the patron had the baritone; it's Marie's Crisis, anything's possible) though when the time came to close the deal he preferred to toddle off with his buddy, leaving the young lady on her own. All I can say is we hardly ever saw a straight man in there, let alone a famous one. It was all "Suddenly Seymour" duets and fighting over whose turn it was to be Velma Kelly. Interesting little unverified factoid: It's called "Marie's Crisis" after a former owner (Marie) and the fact that Thomas Paine allegedly wrote "The Crisis Papers" upstairs. Apparently it's a protected landmark. Understand that I learned this from a former bartender who once bragged about tending bar in a thong. Update: Verified! [NYDN]
