Slate EIC Weisberg Names Trinity To Lead Ladyblog Double X

jacob_weisberg_doublex.jpg Slate announced last week that it would launch a new blog for women dubbed Double X. FishbowlNY spoke to Slate chairman and editor-in-chief Jacob Weisberg and learned who'd be (wo)manning the Double X team, and what he makes of other woman-focused online outlets.

Rather than select a single editor-in-chief for Slate's newest venture, Weisberg is "going with a triumvarate:" Emily Bazelon, Meghan O'Rourke, and Hanna Rosin, all of whom will serve as "co-editors." Bazelon and O'Rourke are frequent Slate contributors, while veteran journalist Rosin (who happens to be married to Slate managing editor David Plotz) has written for The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and New York. Rosin may ring a bell for media obsessives, as at her first gig at The New Republic, she was friends with confessed source fabricator Stephen Glass and served as the inspiration for the Chloe Sevigny character in Shattered Glass, the 2003 movie about the scandal.

Since its launch was announced, Double X has faced criticism that it's jumping on the bandwagon behind Gawker Media's women's issues blog Jezebel and Elizabeth Spiers' planned "Maxim for women." Weisberg dismisses the notion, saying "If you look at XX Factor and you look at Jezebel, you can see they're very different... I've talked to [Spiers] about what she's doing -- she's a friend of mine, and her idea is very different as well." All of these women's blogs may be different, but they'll have to fight to stay alive in the current economic environment, presumably gunning for an ever-lessening share of budget dollars from the same swath of advertisers.

Weisberg's Double X trio definitely have their work cut out for them. If you're in the market for a good, old-fashioned media catfight, Double X seeks a managing editor to round out its masthead.
