Rick Berke Named New York Times Senior Editor and Director of Video

The New York Times has named Rick Berke senior editor and director of video content development. We first learned of Berke’s move late last month after the dust had settled from the buyouts. Berke was most recently an assistant managing editor.

“Rick will draw on his deep knowledge of the newsroom, his ability to nurture talent and his eye for a great story to come up with original and compelling content that reflects the highest standards of our journalism,” said Jill Abramson and Dean Baquet, in a memo to staffers.

The full note from Abramson and Baquet is below.

To the Staff,

Rick Berke has been appointed Senior Editor and Director of Video Content Development. Rick will draw on his deep knowledge of the newsroom, his ability to nurture talent and his eye for a great story to come up with original and compelling content that reflects the highest standards of our journalism. He will give us a fresh eye as we rethink and reexamine our video priorities and he will play a pivotal role as we make video a much larger part of our journalistic mission. He will work closely with Rebecca Howard and Ann Derry and report directly to Jill.

In Rick’s long career at The Times he has had one success after another — as National Political Correspondent,  as Washington Editor and Political Editor, as Assistant Managing Editor for News, as National Editor, and as Assistant Managing Editor for Features and Politics. He nudges, he cajoles, he has a unique talent for building teams. We’re delighted he’s agreed to now turn his energies to video.
