When Fan Worlds Collide: Scene @ NY Comic Con![]() I didn't get to spend nearly as much time this year at New York Comic Con as I have in years past, but I still got to see plenty of costumes—and because, like most major "comic book" conventions, NYCC is as much about film, television, video games, and lots of other pop culture merchandise, the crowd was a wild mix of costumes. The giant-sized Uglydolls were out in an official promotional capacity, but the Boba Fett was a fan (who was wandering around with a near-identical twin, in a more battered olive-tinged armor). In the short distance from the Javits conference rooms to the main entrance to the show floor, I ran into all sorts of characters, from "a Hellboy in full body paint to a cluster of Batman's archenemies... ![]() WJLK disc jockey Jill Pantozzi blogs about comics and science fiction as The Nerdy Bird. Dressed as Zatanna (a superhero witch in the DC Universe), she drove up in fishnet stockings and a motorized wheelchair for a front row center seat; by mid-afternoon, panel moderators were recognizing her and chatting away happily until the guests of honor showed up. She had dyed her hair black for this costume. "My favorite character is Poison Ivy, though," she said, "because my hair is already really red." ![]() Gwendolyn Dreyer (left) and Katie, dressed as "evil" and "good" Mary Marvel respectively, were called up on stage by DC Comics executive editor Dan DiDio to flank him at the podium while he fielded questions about upcoming storylines. Gwen's husband, Nick Doan, is the co-creator of "Pray for Death," which won the first round of competition at DC's webcomics site, Zuda Comics, and began a string of new episodes earlier this month. ![]() Chris is a fan of everything Marvel and DC. His plans for the weekend? "I want to see everything Dark Knight-related." ![]() Gina D. handmade both her Dr. Girlfriend costume and Peat S.'s Monarch outfit. "We came specifically for the Venture Brothers panel," Peat said, "but we're wandering around taking it all in." ![]() Even imperial stormtroopers need to take a lunch break sometimes. ![]() I think these two might have been filming a promotional video for their website, where they plan to dish out relationship advice as "The Tantra Warriors," but that cameraperson could have been with any of the dozens of cable shows and online media outlets covering the convention.
