George R.R. Martin’s Writing Tips

gameofthronesSci-fi author George R.R. Martin visited the Sydney Opera House to discuss his work and Lifehacker Australia was there and turned his discussion into a list of ten tips.

Among the tips from the Game of Thrones author, avoid cliche; grief is powerful, but don’t over use it; and violence should have consequences. Martin also pointed out that writers shouldn’t limit their characters just to meet a budget.

Here is more from Lifehacker Australia: “I knew right from the beginning I wanted the story to be large and complex. Before A Song of Ice and Fire I had been working in television for ten years. Whenever I turned in a script it was a common scene where they would say “George, this is great but it’s too big and expensive; you need to cut it down. You currently have 126 characters — we have a budget for six.”
