‘It’s Not a Sprint, It’s a Marathon’ : NaNoWriMo Tip #21

In the clip embedded above, playwright David Adjmi reminded us of an important fact about the writing life: “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.” The advice applies to all National Novel Writing Month writers–be sure to give your book the support, love, and editing it needs over the next year. Don’t give up after the first month of writing.

In October, Adjmi and nine other writers writers received $50,000 each for the  2010 Whiting Writers’ Awards–celebrating “exceptional talent and promise in early career.” These ten writers didn’t give up after a single month, and they have many more years of work left.

This is our twenty-first NaNoWriMo Tip of the Day. As writers around the country join the writing marathon this month, we will share one piece of advice or writing tool to help you cope with this daunting project.

In the bonus clip embedded below, Whiting winner and poet LB Thompson talked about why she thinks letterpress books will flourish in the digital book future. She is the author of Tendered Notes:  Poems of Love and Money, a letterpress chapbook.
