The BBC may have decided it won't read Hanif Kureishi's story on air because they think it has unfortunate echoes with current events, but the London-based Index on Censorship is picking up the slack by publishing the National Short Story Prize-nominated "Weddings and Beheadings" on its website. It's a really quick read, a monologue from a videographer who's forced by terrorists to film their executions, and the humor is very dark—definitely not for everybody's tastes. Still, it's good to have Kureishi's story out so readers can judge its alleged offensiveness for themselves.
