The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks a temporary Communications Manager to handle the daily press operations of our busy Communications office during the current Communications Manager’s maternity leave (approximately August through November). The Temporary Communications Manager will handle media relations, including tracking MAPC news coverage, responding to reporters’ calls and pitching stories, as well as oversee the work of one Web Specialist in updating MAPC’s website and social media pages. Additional tasks may include proofreading/editing reports and flyers, sending e-invitations using Constant Contact, event planning and contributing to the compilation of MAPC’s Annual Report. MAPC is the regional planning agency serving the people who live and work in the 101 cities and towns of Metropolitan Boston. Duties include working with staff to manage media relations and external communications for MAPC. Daily tasks will include arranging interviews with our staff and the media, writing press releases, responding to press calls. Other duties will include monitoring local and regional media for coverage of MAPC projects and reports, providing an e-mailed summary of press hits to staff each morning. Assist in supervision of full-time Web Communications Specialist, who keeps MAPC’s website (www.mapc.org), blog (http://planning101.mapc.org) and social media pages up to date on a daily basis. The Specialist and Manager work together to ensure MAPC’s brand is consistently portrayed and that all marketing materials effectively promote the agency’s work. Qualifications include BA in Communications, Public Relations or related field, with some professional experience at a government agency, public relations firm or non-profit organization desired. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook required. Knowledge of InDesign, Constant Contact, and familiarity with database management programs such as Microsoft CRM desirable. Full-time candidate preferred, but we are open to more flexible arrangement. Compensation is $30 per hour with no benefits. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the USA and a valid driver’s license or the ability to arrange transportation to meetings around the region.
