Job Requirements As part of the Office of Communications at Vassar College, the Media Relations and Social Media Coordinator will assist the Director of Media Relations and Public Affairs in writing and editing for press releases, responding to media queries, as well as developing and implementing content for social media. This position is 30 hours per week for the academic year (10 months/year, Mid-August through Mid-June).

Responsibilities include:
  • Preparing well-written press releases and advisories, and responding effectively to media inquiries;
  • Partnering with college offices and departments on their publicity needs (e.g. Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, music and dance departments);
  • Selecting and creating content for news and events sections of Vassar's website, using content management system;
  • Strategically promoting college news and events via all applicable social media outlets on a daily basis;
  • Creating twice-weekly e-newsletter about campus events;
  • Identifying new trends and emerging platforms in social media and making recommendations for their use in meeting the needs of the college;
  • Performing other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success in media relations working with the full range of media outlets (print, broadcast, online)
  • Strong written and interpersonal communications skills
  • Facility working with a wide range of colleagues to generate story ideas and press coverage
  • Demonstrated competence using digital communications tools such as MailChimp, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and PhotoShop
  • Proven ability to think and act strategically about social media, including assessment and implementation of emerging social media platforms
  • At least three years of professional experience in media relations, as well as complementary experience working with social media
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably but not exclusively in journalism, communications, or English.
